In one word entertaining. Malcolm Gladwell trys show different actual indicators of success rather than conventional indicators which are often not fit for even general cases. I like the shape of the book, you can easily carry this book even in a small bag while travelling.

    das buch hat mein leben jetzt nicht maßgeblich verändert, aber es war sehr interessant zu lesen. das buch ist in verschiedene aspekte des "mythos erfolg" gegliedert und der autor beschreibt dann ein oder mehrere fallbeispiele dazu, die sich dann auch immer wieder aufgreifen. das können z.b. biographien von bekannten persönlichkeiten oder bestimmte bereiche wie z.b. sport sein. es werden auch recht viele studien und quellen zitiert, für mich immer ein großes plus wenn nicht alles nur auf der persönlichen meinung des autors beruht.

    die deutsche version des buches heißt glaube ich
    "Überflieger: Warum manche Menschen erfolgreich sind - und andere nicht".

    ich fand das buch aber recht einfach auf englisch zu lesen. die sprache ist für den inhalt des buches angemessen (also nicht jugend oder sogar kinderbuch level), aber eben auch nicht unnötig kompliziert sodass man alles 3x lesen oder jede menge wörter nachschauen muss. wenn es einfach beschreiben werden kann, beschreibt der autor es idr auch einfach. er steigt auch immer sehr langsam in die kapitel ein, sodass man gut und leicht verständlich in den jeweiligen teilaspekt rein kommt und macht keine riesen gedankensprünge.

    I am a student at the University of Twente enrolled in the Honours program Entrepreneurship and Business development. As a reading assignment I was assigned to read the book “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell. In his book Gladwell explains with a lot of examples what it takes to be successful. I really liked the way he used the examples of real-world successful people such as Bill Gates to explain his important points. The main point Gladwell made is that Success depends on a lot of factors not just one’s determination and willingness, a person needs luck as well as the culture matters and many other factors. Also, what I liked is that he explained that to become an expert one must have a practice of 10,000 hours so talent alone won’t make a person successful besides that practice does matter. This book really helped me to understand where I as an individual need to work upon to get the success I am looking for in my personal life. Outliers by Gladwell is an amazing illustration for Entrepreneurship students to read about how success can be achieved through practice not just the inherited talent an individual processes. It is a motivation for a person who wants to become an entrepreneur but does not have an inborn talent that even he/she can become successful if some things are taken care of such as a lot of practice, seeing and grabbing opportunity at the right time.

    The author Malcolm Gladwell, a journalist and writer, reveals on the basis of very interesting examples (Bill Gates, The Beatles, etc.) what it takes to become successful. The often mentioned ten thousand hours of practice (work) is just one factor. But the real reason why some people succeed, while others don't are a combination of "ability, opportunity, and utterly arbitrary advantage". Among the opportunities and arbitrary advantages are for example: Born at the right time in the year, at the right time in history, in the right city, by the right parents, going by chance to the right university (no, its not the best university, just the right one), having the right cultural background (Jew, Asian, etc.), and many others.

    This compulsively readable, brilliant written book explains in a straightforward approach what success is really based on. Why is this important? Gladwell: "My wish with Outliers is that it makes us understand how much of a group project success is. When outliers become outliers it is not just because of their own efforts. It's because of the contributions of lots of different people and lots of different circumstances, and that means that we, as a society, have more control about who succeeds - and how many of us succeed - than we think."

    I have read many books about success. Outliers is my favorite so far. Another great book about success, that I really loved was: Bounce: Mozart, Federer, Picasso, and the Science of Success by Matthew Syed.

    Somehow I don't clearly see the point of the book. Of course, we are all here (not only famously successful people) where we are because of a lot of circumstances. After every little story in the book, I was expecting some breakthrough or idea, but it was not happening.

    Everything important in the book could've been told in a few sentences. If I knew that 99% of the book are the stories from the past, I would have skipped it or have different expectations.

    It's a nice book to read in public transportation just to pass your time. For something more, I wouldn't recommend it.
